Lateral Area
A lateral pass in football is a pass to the side. A lateral muscle is a side muscle.
Therefore, lateral area is the area of the sides of a prism (or cylinder).
Surface Area
Surface area of a prism (or cylinder) is just the lateral area plus the area of the two bases.
